Today out of the blue I received a job offer. I don't want to go into too much detail until it's super 100% nailed down, but it's really exciting. It's just one week of stage management but the resume credit is great and the pay is a nice little addition!
It was from a contact I first established when I was 15 years old. I made an effort to reconnect with this individual at least once a year and once I began to work professionally I sent them my resume each December. This apparently has paid off in a big way.
I really dislike "networking". I love meeting fellow theatre professionals and swapping stories and learning more about them and their companies, but when it comes to "selling" myself, I feel like I clam up. I would much rather be recognized for something I did rather than for my marketability, but I understand that this is not how this business works. I need to be able to talk myself up and ask for things and just be a braver person. It's a work in progress.

MARLEY! Congrats on your job!!!
You don't need to sell yourself. Straight up, you are a pleasant and polite, the most flexible of good, healthy communication traits! These traits are immediately recognizable in your demeanor. We all just want to work with people that fit with our work styles and personalities, so you're in luck. If anyone needs you to sell yourself, you probably don't want to work with them anyway. Put less pressure on learning about how to talk yourself up. BUT! learn when to be interested in other stage managers, agreeing with their stories and opinions is a lot easier than telling your own in situations when you feel like you are being judged.
you rock. end of story.
